The short answer
How do I start a trucking company in Georgia?
Review company and carrier requirements first, then use the Georgia Trucking Portal for the relevant vehicle-registration path and Georgia tax resources for IFTA. The state directs new IRP applications through EZ IRP. These accounts are not substitutes for operating-authority review.
Best Truck Permits can help organize the filing work and identify missing information. Tell us what is already complete before selecting a service. You do not need to know every permit name to begin, and a review should not turn into an automatic order for every available filing.

Georgia IRP, IFTA and freight-operation setup
01Use the correct Georgia registration channel
The Georgia Trucking Portal directs new IRP customers to EZ IRP and provides separate renewal and permit resources. Start from that official page when checking the current process. Gather vehicle ownership or lease records and business information before beginning. If the company already has an account, say so in your service request. A new vehicle, an account update and a brand-new fleet application are different jobs, and the quote should reflect the work you actually need.

Georgia DOR provides IFTA registration, renewal, decal and quarterly-return resources. Do not assume that finishing an IRP application also completes a fuel-tax account. Ask whether the vehicle and operating plan qualify, then decide who will maintain the supporting trip and fuel records. If you outsource preparation, agree how records will be delivered and who reviews the return. Missing mileage information is an operational problem that buying a registration package alone will not solve.

For a Savannah-area operation, distinguish the truck journey from the wider movement of the freight. A short local leg is not automatically proof that the work is purely intrastate. Also ask the terminal or customer about facility access, appointment procedures and equipment expectations. Those commercial requirements are separate from forming the company. For Atlanta regional work, list the states you expect to serve rather than saying only "Southeast"; specific routes produce a more useful permit discussion.
04Create a handoff between registration and dispatch
Before arranging a first load, prepare a folder containing the confirmed carrier information, vehicle credentials and insurance contact. Have the owner review it against the work being accepted. Dispatch readiness and legal readiness should be checked separately: a broker may ask for additional documents even after the required registrations are in place. Avoid promising a launch date to a customer based only on the date you ordered filing assistance. Build room for outside-agency and insurer follow-up.
What should you prepare before requesting help?
Start with a working file rather than a stack of applications. Missing information is easier to resolve when each item has an owner and a clear status. Do not upload Social Security numbers, passwords or payment-card information into an ordinary inquiry.
- Business identity: legal name, formation status, physical business address and existing identifiers. An LLC is a business-structure choice, not a universal requirement for every carrier.
- Operating plan: your own goods or customer freight, planned states, sample routes and any specialized cargo. Include the wider shipment context, not only the driver's local journey.
- Equipment: truck and trailer details, ownership or lease arrangement, VINs when available, axle information and weight ratings. Mark a proposed purchase as pending.
- Existing records: registrations, insurance contact and any outstanding agency notices. Keep originals and explain changes instead of silently replacing old information.
- People and timing: the owner or authorized contact, desired start date and who will maintain records after setup. A preferred launch date is not an agency approval deadline.
For federal decisions, use the USDOT eligibility guidance and current FMCSA registration instructions. Check BOC-3 filing requirements and UCR applicability separately. These are distinct questions, not interchangeable names for one registration.
Review my setup needsA practical Georgia planning example
A Georgia owner is deciding between local warehouse deliveries and a dedicated route into Alabama. The intake should show both possibilities, equipment specifications and any existing business records. Compare the initial setup and recurring paperwork for the realistic choice before ordering services. If the owner later changes the vehicle or adds states, update the plan. This keeps the registration discussion tied to actual work instead of a generic list of every account a carrier might ever use.
Illustrative scenario, not a customer testimonial. The correct filings depend on the full facts of your operation.
What will registration assistance cost?
There is no single all-inclusive cost for every trucking company. Compare the current service packages, then separate the assistance fee from agency charges, insurance, vehicle costs and any outside services. Ask which filings are included, what information you must provide, and what happens if an agency requests corrections. Do not assume every listed service applies to your state or equipment.
From your request to the next step
- Complete the short registration form with your business status, equipment and intended work.
- Review the package descriptions and prices before selecting. Existing businesses can request specific support instead of starting again.
- Submit your information. Single-package requests proceed to checkout; multiple-package requests go to representative review so the scope and payment arrangements can be confirmed.
- Work through the supporting documents and outside dependencies. Payment or submission does not authorize operations, and approval timing is not guaranteed.

Georgia registration questions
Where do new Georgia IRP applications begin?
Georgia DOR directs new IRP applications through EZ IRP. Use the official Trucking Portal link below to reach the current instructions and account resources.
Will an IRP application also register me for IFTA?
Treat them as separate programs. Review IFTA eligibility and account setup independently, and confirm the exact services included in any assistance package.
Do you arrange port access as part of registration?
Do not assume terminal access or customer onboarding is included. Explain your planned port work so the service scope and any separate facility requirements can be discussed.
